High Adventure Outdoor Education Centre Ltd takes the training & professional development of all Trainee Instructors very seriously. We work very hard & put a great deal of time, money & most importantly energy into the progress & professional development of all the Trainee Instructors on our programme.
The successful candidates must understand that the same commitment is required in return & that the 'Trainee Year' is a highly challenging BUT equally rewarding year. You MUST be 21 years old and have a full driving licence as well as a drive and determination to succeed in a challenging but very rewarding industry. We are not interested in any applications from people with the idea of this being a 'gap year' type option. We will look to select candidates that can demonstrate a motivation to want to be in the outdoor industry and become a good and articulate outdoor instructor.
We look forward to welcoming you to the 'Outdoor Industry' & expect a great deal of energy, enthusiasm & hard work from you during your Trainee Year. For those candidates that show a genuine passion for this vocation there will be the opportunity to continue your career with us on our Developing Instructor Programme. In this second year we will help to extend your professional development & competencies in climbing, caving, canoeing, hill walking, kayaking along with PCV Minibus Driving.
In 2009 we took on 6 TI's from a selection weekend of 20 shortlisted applicants, we had 280 applications for the selection weekend. For our 2010 cohort we will be shortlisting 20 again and offering 6 TI positions.
NGB Training: Our aim for you is to ensure that by the end of your TRAINEE YEAR you have become TRAINED & ASSESSED in: Climbing - SPA; Canoeing - BCU Level 1 Coach (this includes getting your FSR, 1*, 2* and 3* Canoe Awards) ; BCA Caving - Level 1 Local Cave Leaders Award; MIAS Level 1 (Trail Leader) Mountain Bike Instructor & MIAS Level 2 (Technical Leader) Training; 1st Aid - 2 Day 1st Aid at Work. In other words by the end of the year will be a NGB Qualified Canoe Coach, Climbing Instrcutor, Caving Instructor, Mountain Biking Instructor - look at the existing Trainee Profiles further down this page to see where they are currently upto.
IN - HOUSE Training: You will also become TRAINED & ASSESSED in: High Ropes Course; Low Ropes Course; Archery; Problem Solving; Orienteering
Continued Professional Development: In addition to the technical qualifications you will gain during the year you will also have training in 'soft skills' areas such as: Group management; motivation; conflict resolution; communication; behaviour observation & modification.
The process for leading your own groups will develop throughout the year and will follow the outlined route: 1. Lead intro's & evening activities. 2. In charge of small groups under supervision. 3. Building confidence with groups & taking in-house sessions independently. 4. Work towards being able to confidently run a session under supervision. 5. Able to confidently run sessions.
Pay& Benefits: £300 pcm and board & lodgings, all relevant memberships, log books etc to the different national Governing Bodies and High Adventure Clothing. For any trainees over the age of 25 you will also be eligible to receive between £100 - £200 pcm in the form of working tax credits.

Justyna Baryla
From: Poland Education / Work Experience: MA in Polish Language & Journalism; BA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Prior Outdoor Experience: Spent 1 year working in 2 outdoor centres in Wales, gaining an excellent insight into the British Outdoor Industry and also at working with a variety of school & youth groups. Other / General Info: Really enjoys kayaking & climbing, particularly limestone climbing. Just starting to fall in love with Yorkshire Gritstone. Adam Godwin
From: Rossendale, East Lancs. Education / Work Experience: Bsc Computer Science. Outdoor Experience: Fell runner since the age of 10, a general interest in all things. 'outdoors' but with little technical expertise or knowledge in canoeing, climbing or caving. Very keen outdoor enthusiast with a passion for all outdoor sports. Other general Information: Adam is developing software that is designed to help fell runners choose the quickest route over mountainous terrain. This development work is a combination of Adams passion for the outdoors & his degree in Computer Science. Gone on to: Got a job as an instructor with Outward Bound Ullswater. Whilst at HA:Adam has become a qualified canoe instructor, SPA Climbing instructor and ML trained and a cave leader. Adam now works as an instructor at Outward Bound Ullswater.

Simon Lucas
From: Durham. Outdoor Experience: Very keen paddler from the age of 9. And has always had an interest in the outdoors covering a wide variety of activities. Other general Information: Involved in informal coaching in a variety of kayaking disciplines for 7 years, it was after considering what I had been doing that I realised I wanted to go and get my 'tickets' in several outdoor sports. Whilst at HA: Simon has gained his qualifications as a kayak instructor, canoe instructor, he is also a climbing & caving instructor. Simon now works for Outward Bound - Ullswater. |

From: Roker, Sunderland. Education / Work Experience: 7 GCSE's A - C; 3 AS Levels. Has worked at Sunderland Climbing Wall for over a year. Outdoor Experience: Lots of experience gained from involvement in the cubs, scouts, sea scouts & venture scouts and in addition to this was involved in a 200 hour voluntary work placement with an outdoor company. Other general Information: Into kite boarding, music particularly playing the guitar and juggling. Whilst at HA: James has become a qualified climbing & canoe instructor and caving instructor. |
